Peru's former President Alan Garcia died at 10:05 AM (local time) on Wednesday from a massive cerebral hemorrhage from a gunshot and cardiorespiratory arrest, according to a statement released by Casimiro Ulloa Hospital in Lima.

The country's recently deceased Head of State was hospitalized for a bullet entry and exit wound in his skull at 6:45 AM.

After that, he was taken straight to the operating room, where he entered surgery at 7:17 AM.

Alan Garcia, who served twice as President of Peru, has died in Lima at the age of 69 over a self-inflicted shot to the head.

The ex-Head of State fired at himself after authorities arrived at his home early Wednesday to detain him as part of a corruption probe tied to Brazilian contractor Odebrecht.
