Peru: Ex-Minister Cornejo turns himself in

13:38 | Lima, Apr. 17.

Peru's former Minister Enrique Cornejo turned himself to the national police on Wednesday.

Earlier, the Second Preparatory Investigation Court for Corruption Offenses Committed by Public Officials —led by Judge Juan Sanchez Balbuena— had authorized the order of preliminary detention against him, ex-President Alan Garcia, as well as seven other people under investigation.

They had been included in the probe on alleged bribes paid by Brazilian construction company Odebrecht to former Government officials.

Cornejo told reporters he had not been involved in bribe payments made during Alan Garcia's second term in office (2006-2011).

He served as Minister of Transport-Communications (2008-2011) and Housing-Construction-Sanitation (2007-2008) under the Garcia administration.
