Peru PM: "We will complete the comprehensive justice reform"

11:02 | Lima, Jul. 23.

Prime Minister Cesar Villanueva on Monday affirmed the Executive Branch has made the political decision to complete the comprehensive reform process linked to Peru's justice system.

According to the Cabinet chief, these efforts —which were supported by Congress— will continue on an ongoing basis.

"The aim is to avoid weakening the frontal fight against corruption, and we will achieve it with this political decision to pursue the comprehensive justice reform to the end," he told ATV local channel.

In this regard, Villanueva pointed out recently sworn-in Justice and Human Rights Minister Vicente Zeballos' experience as a jurist and politician will contribute to these efforts.

"(…) being part of the Cabinet is a very high responsibility since you have to determine several topics and keep a cool head to make the corresponding decisions," he noted.

CNM

On the other hand, the official remarked the National Council of the Magistracy (CNM) needs a total restructuring.

Within this context, he stated it was a good decision that Congress unanimously agreed to dismiss all CNM members.

"As we recall, this was a request made by the President of the Republic (to apply article 157 of the Constitution) and, today, they are discussing a multiparty proposal," he said.

Villanueva went on to add a problem like this "should bring us together as a country (…)."
