Peru PM: Gov't works to clear doubts about Tia Maria mining project

10:53 | Lima, Jul. 11.

Peruvian Prime Minister Salvador del Solar on Thursday affirmed the government works in order to clear all concerns and doubts regarding Tia Maria mining project.

In this sense, the high-ranking official reiterated his call for dialogue aimed at reaching an understanding.

Furthermore, Del Solar indicated Southern Peru Copper Corporation obtained the construction permit as it complied with all administrative procedures. The project is expected to be developed in Islay Province (Arequipa region).

However, the Prime Minister pointed out the mining company has promised not to begin construction, unless there is a favorable environment.

Executive Branch spokespersons warned that —even though the license has been issued— this does not mean the company can start operations. It needs to earn —through dialogue— a social license first.

"We are willing to do so, as always," he said in brief statements to the press at the Government Palace.

Remarks were made during the inauguration of the first comprehensive security and justice unit, implemented in Lima's La Victoria district.
