Peru PM: Gov't to maintain neutral stance on parliamentary elections

17:38 | Lima, Oct. 9.

Prime Minister Vicente Zeballos on Wednesday assured that the Peruvian Government will maintain a neutral stance on the parliamentary elections called for January 26, 2020.

"The Government will promote the electoral process by playing a neutral role, within a democratic and transparent framework that ensures a massive participation of citizens," he stated in a press conference with foreign media.

In this sense, the high-ranking official guaranteed the Executive Branch will not be involved in the electoral process itself.

Likewise, he remarked that economic growth and creation of jobs have priority on the Ministerial Cabinet agenda.

"We are putting emphasis on the fight against corruption as a State policy. Public safety is also a priority in order to bring peace and calm to citizens," the Cabinet chief expressed.

Furthermore, Zeballos referred to the confidence motion submitted to the former Congress, pointing out it was a constitutional measure.

"The confidence motion is a valid instrument. The Government resorted to it because it is contained in the Constitution," he added.
