The Ministry of Justice and Human Rights (Minjusdh) reported that security and emergency protocols were activated upon noticing that inmate Joran van der Sloot, a Dutch national, was experiencing a situation that compromised his physical integrity.

His health condition was promptly stabilized.

"Currently, the inmate is in stable condition; he remains under medical evaluation and constant monitoring by the facility's healthcare staff, in accordance with established procedures," the Minjusdh said in a statement.

On December 13 at around 9:50 a.m. (local time), security officers at the Challapalca Penitentiary facility, in Peru's southern Tacna region, became aware of the incident while carrying out the routine breakfast distribution in Pavilion No. 1.

"During this task, staff observed that inmate Joran van der Sloot, a Dutch national who is serving a 28-year prison sentence for the crime of aggravated homicide, was experiencing a situation that compromised his physical integrity," the document stated.

In response, security and emergency protocols were immediately activated, providing the appropriate care and assistance, which enabled his health condition to be promptly stabilized.

Through the National Penitentiary Institute (INPE), the Minjusdh reaffirms its commitment to the internal security of penitentiary facilities, the protection of the inmate population, the full respect of human rights, and the continuous strengthening of actions aimed at maintaining order and security, the document concluded.
