Peru Independence Day holidays: Tourists to contribute US$4 million to Paracas economy

12:17 | Paracas (Ica region), Jul. 31.

The estimated 50,000 tourists who flocked to Paracas district (Ica region) during Independence Day holidays (July 26-30) will contribute US$4 million to the area's economy, Paracas' Tourism and Foreign Trade Chamber (Capatur) Chairman Eduardo Jauregui has reported.

The long weekend and the Lima 2019 Pan American Games —since Paracas hosts the sailing competition— have benefited the beach area, since all accommodation establishments are fully occupied.

"There is a 10% excess demand for rooms. Visitors were accommodated at hotels in (nearby) cities of Chincha Alta or Ica," he remarked.

Jauregui believes that hoteliers will have to increase the number of rooms in the medium term.

The presence of visitors has contributed US$4 million to Paracas economy, due to the revenue generated by accommodation establishments, food sales, boat rides around the Ballestas Islands, visits to the Paracas National Reserve, and the sale of local products (pisco and handicrafts).

Jauregui took the opportunity to comment on President Martin Vizcarra's proposal to end the legislative and presidential terms of office a year earlier than scheduled, saying this is the only way out of the political crisis in the country.

"It is a good, feasible and constitutional decision to renew political powers in our country and to thus feel truly represented," he stated.

In this sense, the union leader noted that recent political events do not affect the development of tourism since reservations were made one year in advance.

"To sum up, tourism is operating normally," he said.
