Peru: Domestic tourism sector to grow up to 12% on Independence Day holidays

14:40 | Lima, Jul. 24.

Domestic tourism will expand between 10% and 12% on Independence Day holidays (July 26-30), since they coincide with the school break, the Pan American Games and the bonus payment workers receive at this time of the year, the Lima Chamber of Commerce (CCL) projected on Wednesday.

"This is due to the long weekend starting Friday, July 26, at noon and running through Tuesday, July 30, a non-working day decreed by the Government," CLL's Tourism Guild President Gabriela Fiorini stated.

She estimates the average expenditure per person will stand at S/500 (about US$152), including transport, food, accommodation, and recreational activities.

"An option to find good deals for these holidays is Ytuqueplanes.com, a website managed by the Exports and Tourism Promotion Board (PromPeru)," Fiorini went on to say.

Likewise, the Peruvian Government —through the Foreign Trade and Tourism Ministry (Mincetur)— has presented the national strategy "Safe Tourism" aimed at guaranteeing a safe travel experience and stay for tourists.

According to the government official, many families in provinces across Peru will head to Lima to witness the Pan American Games first-hand, thus showing an atypical behavior compared to previous years and helping invigorate the sector.

"Affordable tour packages are being offered by different travel agencies, and for those planning family visits as well, since airlines have advertised very attractive prices for a while now," she noted.

As for the preferred destinations, Fiorini affirmed that many holidaymakers will travel within their home region.
