Peru: Independence Day address to include Judiciary reform proposals

15:56 | Bagua (Amazonas region), Jul. 12.

President Martin Vizcarra on Thursday affirmed he will introduce concrete proposals to overhaul the Judicial Power as part of his Independence Day address to the nation scheduled for July 28 at Congress.

"We need a comprehensive change. Although it's true we have requested Congress to apply article 157 of the Constitution to dismiss bad government officials immediately, this is not enough because what we heard is a shame and we strongly reject it," he stated from Bagua province.

The Judiciary reform is also necessary due to the loss of confidence in the institution, he explained.

In response to Judiciary Head Duberli Rodriguez's request to let this branch of government be part of the reform, Vizcarra did not rule out the possibility, although not necessarily through a practicing magistrate but through an honest, experienced former judge.

"We need a view from the inside and outside to bring about a comprehensive and effective reform in favor of the population," he told the press.

According to the Peruvian leader, the commission seeking such reform will be introduced soon.

The team will consist of experienced individuals with ethical behavior, who are good at what they do, he concluded.
