Peru: Ica region leads mining investment ranking

11:55 | Lima, Jan. 10.

Peru's Ica region received US$694.6 million in mining investments between January and November 2018, thus ranking first among national regions, privately-run National Society of Mining, Oil, and Energy (SNMPE) informed Thursday.

This outcome was underpinned by Mina Justa mining project construction (Marcobre) and Marcona Expansion completion (Shougang Hierro Peru)

According to SNMPE, Moquegua holds the second place (US$536 million) thanks to Quellaveco mining project (Anglo American-Mitsubishi). Other mining ventures are currently in execution in that region as well.

Likewise, Tacna region takes the third position (US$419 million), while Arequipa region holds the fourth place (US$401 million).

Furthermore, the guild indicated these four regions accounted for 49% of total mining investments between January and November 2018 in the Inca country, reaching US$4.181 billion.

Production

On the other hand, SNMPE pointed out Arequipa region led copper production registering 453,000 fine metric tons (FMT), followed by Ancash region (418,000 FMT) and Apurimac region (346,000 FMT).

Meanwhile, La Libertad region was the major producer of gold (32 tons), Ancash region of zinc (498,000 FMT), and Junin region of silver (642 tons).
