Peru holds portfolio of 14 solar power plant projects with 2,447 MW capacity

The Ministry of Energy and Mines (Minem) reported that Peru has a portfolio of 14 solar power plant projects to be built in various regions over the coming years.

These plants will begin commercial operation by 2028 and will inject 2,447 megawatts (MW) of power into the National Interconnected Electric System (SEIN).

These projects are located in Arequipa, Moquegua, and Ica regions, with two of them belonging to isolated systems to be developed in Loreto region.

Nevertheless, all of them will contribute to increasing the share of renewable energy in Peru's energy matrix, strengthening the country's energy security and ensuring electricity supply for the entire population.

Of the total portfolio, there are currently four photovoltaic power plant projects with the most progress in their construction, according to official reports.

These projects represent a total investment exceeding US$717 million.

Among these projects, the Sunny solar plant, located in the Arequipa region, stands out. It will have an installed capacity of 204 MW and an investment surpassing US$177 million.

Following it are the Solimana and Lupi solar plants, both located in Moquegua region. The first has a capacity of 250 MW and an investment exceeding US$176 million, while the second will inject 150 MW into the SEIN, requiring an investment of more than US$193 million.

The last project on this list is the San Martin Solar Power Plant, also located in Arequipa region, with a total investment worth over US$168 million and an installed capacity of 252.4 MW.

Minem highlights that these solar generation projects will help strengthen the country's energy security, create jobs in various regions, boost the local economy, and optimize Peru's resources, contributing to closing energy access gaps for the nation's most disadvantaged sectors.
