Peru: Health Min and Navy sign agreement to produce Samay respirators

12:38 | Lima, Jul. 24.

The Ministry of Health (Minsa) and the Peruvian Navy signed an inter-institutional cooperation agreement to coordinate efforts for the production, certification, distribution and implementation of 'Samay' basic artificial respirators, which will serve to strengthen the care of COVID-19 patients in Peru.

Within this framework, Health Minister Pilar Mazzetti said that each Samay ventilator "will live up to its (Quechua) name and help many people in urgent need of breathing."

Likewise, the high-ranking official said this is the outcome of the "efforts undertaken by Peruvians for Peruvians."

"It is important that our armed forces, in particular our Navy, be reinforced so that everything (we have planned) can become a reality. So, next time that an emergency arises, we will have all supplies that are needed," she expressed.

The Cabinet member also thanked the National Confederation of Private Business Institutions (Confiep) for mobilizing support funds in a short time.

"If we Peruvians don't give up, we will all be able to resist as best as we can during this pandemic," she remarked.

For his part, Peruvian Navy General Commander Fernando Cerdan indicated that this agreement will help in the care of patients affected by COVID-19.

This week, the Navy delivered the first 30 mechanical ventilators at the Callao Base, out of the 100 that have been produced.

Minsa pointed out that the private sector —represented by Confiep— financed the purchase of inputs in domestic and international markets with more than US$500,000 and made them available to the Government.

Confiep General Manager Patricia Teullet was also present at the signing of the agreement.
