The Peruvian Government will allocate over S/1.14 billion (around US$344 million) to sanitation works aimed at accomplishing total drinking water coverage in Lima, Housing, Construction, and Sanitation Minister Javier Pique affirmed Thursday.
Through the Safe Water Program, this investment will benefit over 260,000 citizens in Lima and Callao.
Goals
The Housing, Construction, and Sanitation Ministry (MVCS) is committed to speeding up
water and sewer system projects to close Lima and Callao's sanitation gap, thus improving Peruvian citizens' quality of life.
"We will continue working until achieving our goal that —by 2021— all Peruvians living in urban zones have
water and sanitation (services)," the official expressed.
It should be noted the objective is to increase potable
water service coverage in urban areas from 94.5% to 94.8% by the end of 2018.
Concerning the sanitation service coverage, the goal is to go from 88.3% to 90.3%.
As part of the National Sanitation Plan, the MVCS is expected to make investments worth over S/39 billion (around US$11.7 billion) thru 2021.
In this sense, the sector has been boosting over 2,000 urban and rural sanitation works all across the country, with an investment exceeding S/2.13 billion (around US$644 million).
Joined by Minister Pique, President Martin Vizcarra on Thursday inspected the
drinking water and sewer system expansion works in Lima's Rimac district.
Over S/100 million (around US$30 million) have been invested in this project, which will benefit more than 46,000 citizens.
