The Governments of Canada and the United States will grant Peru a total of US$27.5 million to implement the Natural Infrastructure for Water Security Project in the Inca country.
The announcement was made by U.S. and Canadian Ambassadors to Lima Krishna R. Urs and Gwyneth Kutz, respectively.
In this sense, the United States will allocate US$15.4 million, while Canada will contribute with US$12.1 million.
Objectives
According to the diplomats, this project seeks to increase the conservation, restoration, recovery of ancestral techniques, and
sustainable use of ecosystems in order to reduce water risks such as droughts,
floods, and water pollution.
"If we do not take care of
natural infrastructure, we will not be able to ensure water supply for communities," Ambassador Urs noted.
"The basis for future
economic growth and social stability depends on the provision of this resource," he added.
For her part, Ambassador Kutz remarked "women are key agents of change. Thanks to their knowledge and major role in
water management, they can contribute to finding innovative solutions."
Statements were made during the launch event of the Natural Infrastructure for
Water Security Project, held at the U.S. Ambassador's residence in Lima, Peru.
