Peru: Government reiterates call for calm, respect for democracy

Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Claudia Cornejo on Friday reiterated the Government's call for calm, as well as to respect democracy and all institutions.

"As the President of the Republic has stated, it is unacceptable for a group of people to attempt to incite the Armed Forces to break the rule of law," she told reporters.

In this regard, the high-ranking official stressed that —in the face of a polarized and complex situation, such as the one experienced by the country— it is important to remain calm.

"The electoral process is underway; we wait patiently for the official results; we respect democracy and all our institutions," she said.

Concerning the information about a mobilization taking place this Saturday, the minister requested citizens to consider the fact that crowds are a potential source of coronavirus contagion.

In addition, the Cabinet member reiterated the request not to hold demonstrations near vaccination centers, noting that the right of people to be immunized freely and safely shall not be affected.

"Vaccination is the best tool to get out of this health crisis that has claimed the lives of so many people around the world," she concluded.

Remarks were made during a press conference held at the Government Palace in Lima.
