Peru: Council of State asks everyone to stay calm and respect election results

09:58 | Lima, Jun. 16.

The Council of State has asked everyone to stay calm and respect the runoff election results to be disclosed by electoral bodies —a commitment that participating political groups have adhered to.

This body brings together the highest authorities of State powers to discuss relevant issues, including the President of the Republic, as well as the heads of Congress and the Judiciary, the Attorney General, and the Chair of the Constitutional Court, among others.

In the statement issued on Tuesday night, the Council of State said that the general public and political groups —as they have pledged to do— must "await and respect the final election results."

"Let us stay calm and respect the results. Within the framework of their powers, electoral authorities shall issue the final results and proclaim the person who will assume the Presidency of the country for the next five years," the statement reads.

The Council of State noted that contesting elections is the only way to gain power, so promoting different forms to do so "does not fit a constitutional democracy."

"We respect our electoral bodies. They are responsible for resolving the controversies that may arise in the electoral process. We reject any type of pressure and smear campaigns against electoral authorities," the Council's members said in the document.

"We reiterate our firm commitment —within the framework of our powers and independence— to continue working to face and overcome the crisis that the country is going through. Our goal is to serve the Nation and, as authorities, we are subject to public scrutiny," the statement added.
