The Peruvian Government hopes that the political process in Paraguay, following the resignation of President Santiago Peña, will unfold in accordance with said country's constitutional framework, as well as in an atmosphere of social peace and legitimacy.
In a post on its X account, the Presidential Office said it was attentively following the political situation in the sister Republic of Paraguay.
"The Government of Peru is attentively following the political situation in the sister Republic of Paraguay and hopes that the current political process will unfold in accordance with its constitutional framework, in an atmosphere of social peace and legitimacy, and with full respect for democratic institutions," the Executive Branch stated on Thursday.
The statement comes after Paraguayan President Santiago Peña Palacios announced his resignation from the Presidency in a message published earlier today, thereby bringing his term in office to an end.
"I have made the decision to submit my resignation from the Presidency of the Republic. I do so thinking about our country's stability, social peace, and the need to safeguard our democratic institutions," he said in his message.
Peña took office on August 15, 2023. He is awaiting Parliament's consideration of his resignation.
Senators and members of the Chamber of Deputies have already indicated that most of them would accept the decision made by the Head of State.
