Peru: Construction guild expels Odebrecht associate

Private-run Peruvian Chamber of Construction (Capeco) on Monday expelled Graña y Montero construction corporation from the guild.

In Peru, Graña y Montero is an associate of the Brazilian construction company Odebrecht, which is involved in alleged corruption offenses.

In a brief statement, Capeco informed that Graña y Montero "has been permanently removed from the association" after the resolution of the Ethics Committee on the matter was approved. 

Likewise, it pointed out the decision was made in accordance with what is established in the Article 36 of Capeco's Code and Rules of Ethics Manual.


In August, Prosecutor Jose Domingo Perez requested the Judiciary 36-month preventive detention for Jose Alejandro Graña and Hernando Constancio Graña, businessmen under investigation for alleged bribes in the above-mentioned case. 

However, the prosecutor dropped the petition after both people signed an effective collaboration agreement and gave up the protection of their identities. 

Odebrecht

As is known, the Brazilian construction giant admitted to having paid millions in bribes to government officials in Peru, in order to secure public-works contracts.

As a result, Odebrecht benefited from over US$143 million between 2005 and 2014 in Peru, according to the U.S. Justice Department. 

In addition, four ex-Presidents have been linked to the Brazilian company such as: Alejandro Toledo (2001-2006)Alan Garcia (2006-2011)Ollanta Humala (2011-2016), and Pedro Pablo Kuczynski (2016-2018)
