Peru Agriculture Min to meet with U.S. counterpart

10:35 | Lima, Aug. 20.

Peru's Agriculture and Irrigation Minister Gustavo Mostajo is expected to meet with U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue next month in Washington D.C., the Andean country's Agriculture and Irrigation Ministry (Minagri) informed.

The gathering is intended to make progress on the bilateral agricultural agenda.

Part of this agenda is focused on securing Peruvian agricultural products' access to the U.S. market.

To do so, the Minagri head on Friday received a delegation from the North American nation —led by U.S. Ambassador to Lima Krishna R. Urs.

Both authorities discussed the phytosanitary progress of Peruvian blueberry exports —with spraying carried out in the country of origin— and measures to ease the entry of pomegranate arils.

Likewise, the meeting addressed the work being done jointly by the National Agricultural Sanitation Service (Senasa) and its U.S. equivalent Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) so as to prevent the entry of plant pests and diseases.

Mostajo informed his portfolio is working to speed up the implementation of a project to eradicate fruit flies in the Inca country's coast and highlands, with the support of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

On the other hand, the official reiterated Peru's commitment —under the FTA with the United States— to securing shipments of certified wood.

In this sense, both sides expressed their willingness to work together.
