About 12,000 tourists visited the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu, located in Cusco's Urubamba province, during the long Holy Week break, the
Decentralized Culture Directorate (DDC) in Cusco has reported.
The DDC-Cusco Office stated that, according to a report issued by the National Archaeological Park of Machu Picchu, 11,826 visitors arrived at the Inca citadel during the four holidays.
Moreover, it reported that 2,938 visitors flocked to this wonder of the world on April 6; while 3,274 visitors were recorded on April 7.
Meanwhile, on April 8, the llaqta attracted 3,150 visitors, both domestic and foreign, whereas 2,464 individuals explored the Inca Sanctuary and Cultural Heritage of Humanity on April 9.
"These figures show the increase in the number of visitors to the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu," the head of said cultural entity, Maritza Rosa Candia, said on Wednesday, noting that the site can receive up to 4,044 visitors a day.
She also underscored that no incidents were reported in Machu Picchu during the long break, thanks to the work carried out by guards and conservators at the Inca city, who assisted visitors in a timely manner.
"We are satisfied with the adequate service provided to visitors, and we continue working to protect and preserve Machu Picchu, which is a world heritage site and the pride of Peruvians," Maritza Rosa Candia expressed.
