announced on Thursday that Peru and his country are entering a golden era in bilateral relations between the two countries, which marks 200 years since diplomatic relations were established.
"I want to thank President (Keiko) Fujimori for receiving us today. I firmly believe that we are entering a new era, a golden era in our relations, because our administration and that of Keiko Fujimori, in the first 40 days, have been working very hard," Rubio expressed.
He said the priority of Peru's policy is to restore security and order because when both are threatened, "ordinary people are the victims as they cannot defend themselves."
The State Secretary emphasized that these are transnational terrorist organizations because they have no regard for countries' sovereignty and carry out their illegal activities in different parts of the world.
Likewise, he expressed his satisfaction that Peru has joined the Shield of the Americas, an initiative that will allow transnational criminal groups to be fought, as they have better logistical equipment than the countries where they carry out their illicit activities.
"We will assist you as much as we can; that is our interest. I also want to point out that there are real opportunities for trade agreements that will benefit Peru and its people, as well as the people of the United States," Rubio stated.
"That will be the focus of our relationship," he concluded.
The Secretary of State is making an official visit to Peru as part of a tour, also involving Ecuador and Colombia, aimed at strengthening relations with those countries.
