Peru: 55% believe ex-Attorney General must be removed from Prosecutor's Office

The latest El Comercio-Ipsos poll has revealed 55% of Peruvians think ex-Attorney General Pedro Chavarry should be removed from the Prosecutor's Office, whereas 32% consider he should resign.

According to the study, merely 8% of the Inca country's citizens think he should remain in the Public Ministry.

On January 8, the former Attorney General stepped down from the post as he submitted his resignation letter at the Public Ministry's headquarters. He was replaced by Zoraida Avalos.

It should be noted Chavarry's decision was welcomed by Congress members from different political groups, who coincided that the constitutional complaints and investigations against him must run their course.

On the other hand, the poll reveals there is a positive opinion of the Lava Jato Case Special Prosecution Group, composed of Prosecutors Jose Domingo Perez and Rafael Vela, among others.

In this sense, 65% of respondents approve of the team's performance, whereas 22% disapprove of it, and 13% do not specify.

Furthermore, the survey finds 49% of Peruvians support the collaboration agreement between the Prosecutor's Office and Odebrecht, 45% are against it, and 6% do not specify.

Removal and reinstatement

Former Attorney General Pedro Chavarry —on New Year's Eve— decided to remove Prosecutors Rafael Vela and Jose Domingo Perez from the Lava Jato Case.

Said decision brought protestors to the streets in several cities of the Inca country.

The removal of the top prosecutors investigating the case did harm the agreement and, therefore, the investigation.

On January 2, Chavarry reversed his previous decision by reinstating Lava Jato Case Prosecutors Vela and Perez in their posts.

Lava Jato Case Special Prosecution Group Coordinator Vela had previously affirmed there was hostility against the Odebrecht investigation prosecutors. Reports suggested the existence of friction between his team and the then-Attorney General.

In Peru, the Attorney General is not designated or confirmed by the President of the Republic. In fact, President Vizcarra had expressed his full support to the continuation of Prosecutors Vela and Perez in the case.
