Spokespersons from various Congress parties on Wednesday urged recently-elected Attorney General Pedro Chavarry to step down, after he admitted to having lied —on several occasions— about attending a meeting with a group of journalists.
According to lawmaker Humberto Morales, the Attorney General "must definitely step aside (…) for the sake of the institutions that govern the country."
For his part, legislator Edmundo del Aguila pointed out "none parliamentary or political group should support him (Chavarry)."
Likewise, Congressman Gino Costa believes Chavarry's resignation is necessary as he disregarded the truth.
Earlier on Wednesday, the Attorney General admitted he had met with a group of journalists at Iza Motors General Manager Antonio Camayo's house.
In an interview with El Comercio newspaper, Chavarry noted the purpose of the gathering was to counteract a campaign against his
election as Attorney General.
Later, Chavarry reaffirmed he will not leave his post despite having admitted that he had lied.
"I don't have to. I have not committed any crime," he told local Exitosa radio.
Case
As is known, a series of audio recordings —involving new Attorney General Pedro Chavarry and suspended
Supreme Judge Cesar Hinostroza— was recently released amid a scandal implicating National Council of the Magistracy (CNM) members and Judicial Branch officials.
The conversation shows the two men making arrangements to hold a meeting with representatives of media outlets.
Hinostroza is heard telling Chavarry about the urgent need to meet with the media.
In another audio clip, in which they talk about the birthday party of
CNM then-Chairman Orlando Velasquez, Hinostroza emphasizes not to forget about the meeting with "his friend in the media."
