Congress parties urge resignation of Peru Attorney General

14:38 | Lima, Sep. 3.

Congress political parties —except Fuerza Popular and APRA— on Monday sent a letter to Peru's Public Ministry urging the resignation of Attorney General Pedro Chavarry, as well as Supreme Prosecutors Victor Raul Rodriguez and Tomas Galvez.

The initiative is intended to ensure investigations into the criminal organization known as the Port's White Collars are smoothly carried out without the intervention of said magistrates.

The missive —addressed to the Board of Supreme Prosecutors— was delivered by members of the following political parties: Peruanos por el Kambio (PPK), Alianza para el Progreso (APP), Accion Popular (AP), Frente Amplio (FA), Nuevo Peru (NP), as well as non-grouped and independent legislators.

In this regard, Congressman Gino Costa explained that three —out of five members of the Board— are allegedly implicated in the complaint filed by Prosecutor Pablo Sanchez.

"They have to step aside. The investigation will be hindered if they don't resign their seats. We urge them to do so to make way for a renewal process with the purpose of discovering the truth," he stated.

Chavarry —who was sworn in as Attorney General last July— has been investigated for more than six months and remains in his position despite the existence of audio recordings and even though three effective collaborators had accused him of being a member of the above-mentioned criminal organization.

"It is imperative that they step down, but if they don't, we'll call on the population to mobilize. There is no justice if they remain leading the Public Ministry," he stated.
