Over 2,700 Canadians stuck in Peru returned home

10:09 | Lima, Apr. 18.

More than 2,700 Canadians —who got stranded in Peru due to the state of emergency and border closure over the COVID-19 pandemic— have returned to their country on seven special flights.

According to Air Canada, the flights were operated at the request of the Embassy of Canada to Peru. The last one left on Thursday, April 16, and carried 80 Canadian nationals who came from Bolivia.

The return process, which kicked off with the first flight on March 24, has allowed the North American country to repatriate its citizens, stranded not only in the Peruvian capital of Lima, but also in the Imperial City of Cusco and other corners of Peru.

Before boarding the plane, the passengers underwent a medical check-up at the Canadian Embassy headquarters in Lima's Miraflores district to detect and isolate potential infected people.

The seven flights, operated between March 24 and April 16, departed from Air Group No. 8 of the Peruvian Air Force (FAP) in Callao to the city of Toronto.

The foreigners were repatriated in Boeing 777 wide-body aircraft, configured to accommodate 400 passengers (40 in business class, 24 in premium economy, and 336 in economy class).
