National Holidays: What is celebrated every July 28 in Peru?

07:13 | Lima, Jul. 28.

Peru celebrates 202 years of republican life today, July 28, an emblematic day for all Peruvian citizens, since it marks the anniversary of the country's independence proclaimed by Jose de San Martin in 1821.

Peru's freedom was achieved after a period of fight and sacrifice, by men and women who gave their lives to achieve sovereignty of the homeland.

According to Jose Valdizan Ayala, head of the Professional School of History at Lima-based San Marcos University, the Independence of Peru ended nearly 300 years of Spanish rule and marked the beginning of a new stage of autonomy and self-determination for the Peruvian people.

"Peru's Independence story involves a rich and complex narrative, full of fights, sacrifices, and heroism. The proclamation of independence was a result of a number of historical events that occurred since 1780, with the great rebellion of Tupac Amaru II, which sowed the seeds of discontent and resistance against Spanish colonialism in Peru and became a symbol of resistance and fight for freedom in the Vice-royalties of Peru, Buenos Aires, and New Granada," Valdizan told Andina news agency.

The historian stated that the independence process in Peru was a multifaceted movement, given that it involved various ethnic and social groups which, despite their differences, contributed to the fight for independence.

"Independence Day also provides an opportunity to reflect on the values and principles shaping the foundation of national identity," Valdizan remarked.

"It is a date to reaffirm our nation's commitment to democracy, human rights, social justice, and to ensure we are just citizens open to dialogue, who exercise solidarity, and who are free of discrimination and intolerance," he added.

National Holidays' importance

In Valdizan's view, July 28 and July 29 enable Peruvians to reflect on the achievements made by the country since its independence, as well as the challenges that it still faces.

"It is an opportunity to celebrate the progress made and to reflect on how the country may continue to work towards its ideals and goals. It is a day to remember the past, to celebrate the present, and to look into the future with hope and determination," he pointed out.
