Peru and Japan took a new step in strengthening their bilateral relationship through the signing of the decision establishing the Subcommittee on Cooperation in Science and Technology, within the framework of the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) in force between the two countries since 2012.

The agreement was officialized in a ceremony led by Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Teresa Mera and Japanese Ambassador to Peru, Tsuyoshi Yamamoto, at the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur) headquarters in Lima.

During this event, Minister Mera stressed that the creation of this subcommittee "strengthens strategic ties with Japan and will promote science, technology, and innovation as drivers of economic growth, productivity, and sustainability."

The new subcommittee will foster the exchange of experiences and best practices, as well as the development of joint research, innovation, and technical cooperation projects involving universities, research centers, and public and private entities from both countries.

Likewise, Mincetur's chief stated that it is Peru's interest for the first meeting of this subcommittee to take place during the first quarter of 2026.

Japan is currently Peru's third most important trading partner in Asia and seventh worldwide.

Since the agreement came into force, Peruvian exports to the Japanese market have exceeded US$25 billion, of which 7.8% corresponds to non-traditional products, reflecting an increasingly diversified and dynamic relationship.

This signing aligns with the Roadmap to Strengthen the Peru-Japan Strategic Partnership. It was agreed upon at the APEC Peru 2024 Leaders' Meeting and reinforces both countries' commitment to innovation, sustainability, and technological development.
