The residents of the district of Machu Picchu in Cusco are happy and motivated by the 100th anniversary ceremony celebrating the discovery of the Inca site, said the president of the National Chamber of Tourism (Canatur), Carlos Canales.

"Last night there was a serenade in the town of Machu Picchu, with a series of meetings and celebrations. The people are motivated and excited about the celebrations," Canales said.

He pointed out that during today's Tinkay ceremony and gala concert, great emphasis was put on the preservation of the ancient ruins, as recommended by the Ministry of Culture.

"The greatest message we can deliver today is that these events have brought us together, strengthened national unity and increased tourist awareness [of the site]," he told Andina.

The head of Canatur noted that the media impact of these activities and tonight's music and light show will result in a 25 or 30 percent increase in the tourism sector.

"Today's event places emphasis on strengthening the unity of the Peruvians, based on an icon like Machu Picchu," he added.
