Machu Picchu represents the essence of being Peruvian and everyone must be proud of it, Peruvian President Alan Garcia said on Thursday upon his arrival in Cusco for the 100th anniversary celebrations of the scientific discovery of Machu Picchu.

“I am pleased to come to Machu Picchu (…) I want to tell every Peruvian to be proud of it (…) It is the essence of being Peruvian,” said the president.

President Garcia said he is also pleased that the world sees Peru not only as an economic, trade and growth destination, but also for its great cultural wealth.

Earlier today, President Garcia travelled to the southern Cusco region to inaugurate the 31.7-million-sol Sambor Huaypo irrigation project, which is to benefit more than 24,000 people.

“We are here to pay homage to Machu Picchu, listening to ‘Los Jaivas’ and watch the sound and lights show,” added President Garcia.
