The celebrations for the centennial anniversary of Machu Picchu began this morning with the staging of the traditional Tinkay ceremony, carried out in the Inca citadel located in Urubamba (Cusco).

The Tinkay ceremony is a salute of the Inca Pachacutec, interpreted by the Peruvian actor Nivardo Carrillo and a group of dancers. It is also expected a salute from the Cuatro Suyos.

In this traditional ceremony the Inca pays tribute to the pachamama or mother earth.

After the ceremony there will be a concert performed by Chile’s Los Jaivas with their song ‘Alturas de Machu Picchu’, followed by Pachatusan group and their song ‘Sentimiento Inca’, and Arco Iris group with ‘Melodia Andina’.

Peruvian authorities will attend the celebrations. Earlier today, Peruvian President Alan Garcia confirmed his presence.
