Garcia inaugurates irrigation project, attends Machu Picchu centennial show in Cusco

Peruvian President Alan Garcia inaugurates the 31.7-million-sol Sambor Huaypo project in Cusco.

Peruvian President Alan Garcia visited Thursday the southeastern Cusco region to inaugurate the Sambor Huaypo irrigation project and attend today's celebrations marking the 100th anniversary of Machu Picchu's scientific discovery.

Foreign Minister Jose Antonio Garcia Belaunde, Agriculture Minister Jorge Villasante and Defense Minister Jaime Thorne accompanied the head of state during his 269th domestic trip since taking office in 2006.
 
The Sambor Huaypo project will irrigate 2,495ha of land in the districts of Anta, Huarocondo and Zurite, at an altitude of 3,500m above sea level.
 
This irrigation project required an investment of 31.7 million soles and will benefit directly and indirectly a total of 24,492 people.
 
Machu Picchu celebrations
 
Later Thursday, President Garcia visited the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu to participate in the centennial celebrations for Machu Picchu's discovery.

Activities include several artistic and cultural festivals such as the reenacment of the traditional “Tinkay” ceremony and a Salute to the “Cuatro Suyos” (Four Corners of the Empire).
 
Moreover, folk group Los Jaivas will perform “Heights of Machu Picchu” as part of the gala concert.
