Ten photographs taken by US explorer Hiram Bingham are part of the exhibit “Machu Picchu 100 years. A glimpse of the expedition that astonished the world,” which was inaugurated Wednesday night at a local hotel in Cusco.

The organizers noted that the exhibition is part of the celebrations carried out in Aguas Calientes for the centennial anniversary of the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu.

The photographs, loaned by the National Geographic to Peru, were taken by Bingham during his expeditions to Machu Picchu between 1911 and 1915.

It includes one portrait of Bingham at his campsite made by Elwood Erdis.

Among the photographs displayed, there is a panoramic photo of the citadel when it was still covered by vegetation. There are also photos of the Intihuatana (a ritual stone), the Gate of the Sun (Intipuncu) and a wall of the Temple of the Sun when it was not refurbished by archaeologists.

The exhibition “Macuh Picchu 100 years. A glimpse of the expedition that astonished the world,” held at the fourth floor of the Sumaq Machu Picchu hotel, will remain open to the public until the end of the year.
