Peru is moving forward in its strategy towards becoming the sole user of the pisco designation of origin, currently shared with Chile, the National Institute for the Defense of Competition and Protection of Intellectual Property (Indecopi) affirmed Friday.

In this sense, Indecopi Distinctive Signs Director Ray Meloni highlighted the Peruvian State's long-standing efforts to this end.

"We have to share [pisco's] designation of origin [with Chile] nowadays, but the [Peruvian] State has a strategy to move forward and become the only one [holding the denomination]," he explained.

"We are making progress in various aspects to secure such exclusivity," he added.

In this respect, he mentioned the country's FTAs recognizing the beverage as native to the Inca nation.

"We are also fighting hard in the trading sphere. We are opening up more markets to position pisco, thus allowing consumers to compare and differentiate Peru's and Chile's brandies."

Pisco is linked to Peruvian traditions, gastronomy and leisure.

Certification

In addition, Meloni anticipated the Peruvian Government will certify the said designation to prevent other locally-produced grape brandies from using the "pisco label."

"Producers will have to pass the certification [process] before taking their products to the market. This is to guarantee their pisco has the characteristics consumers expect," he concluded.
