In the heart of the Peruvian jungle in Pasco region, the district of Pozuzo is adorned with tradition and flavor to celebrate a Christmas that transcends time. Here, the Austro-German heritage honors its roots through artisanal sweets, the visit of Saint Nicholas, and customs that have united generations.

As historian Wilfredo Laura Contreras explains, in Pozuzo, Christmas is not just a date; it is a legacy that is baked, sung, and shared.

Stollen: the panettone that carries the history of Pozuzo

Stollen is the soul of Christmas in Pozuzo. This panettone of German origin, with its powdered sugar coating that evokes alpine snow, is prepared with recipes passed down from grandparents to grandchildren.

"It's not just bread, it's a symbol of our identity," says Wilfredo Laura.

He explains that making this panettone is a family ritual. The dough, enriched with local butter, dried fruit, candied oranges, and a touch of brandy, is patiently kneaded and lovingly baked.

"Each family adds their own touch, but they all agree that Stollen should be dense, moist, and full of flavor," adds the historian. The most valuable aspect is that its preparation unites families, creating a bridge between the past and the present.

Cookies and Sweets: The art of preserving tradition

Alongside Stollen, Christmas tables are filled with gingerbread cookies, Lebkuchen (spice cookies), Vanilla cookies, and Bienenstich (honey cake).

"These sweets are the soul of our Christmas," Laura remarks.

Gingerbread cookies, with their aroma of cinnamon and honey, are prepared in community workshops, where people learn not only to bake but also to value their heritage.

The Christmas market also offers high-altitude coffee, cacao liqueurs, and artisanal chocolates—products that complement the gastronomic experience and reflect the richness of the Pasco region.

Saint Nicholas: A visit that teaches values

The figure of Saint Nicholas remains a cornerstone of Christmas celebrations in Pozuzo. His visit, laden with sweets and messages of reflection, reminds children of the importance of kindness and gratitude.

"The most remarkable aspect is that this event not only promotes the local economy but also fosters sustainability, with decorations made from recycled materials. In Pozuzo, Christmas is celebrated with respect and in harmony with our culture," says Carla Shuller.

Finally, an impressive nativity scene was set up in the Yanacancha church. According to the young people involved, recycled materials were used in its construction. The scene depicts the biblical passage of the birth in Bethlehem.
