At a meeting with Energy and Mines Minister Luis Bravo De La Cruz, Australia's new Ambassador, James Yeomans, reaffirmed his country's commitment to strengthening strategic cooperation in the mining sector, highlighting it as the cornerstone of the bilateral relationship.

"You are the first minister to officially receive me, and that is very important—especially given the significance of our relationship in the mining sector, which is a main axis of the relationship between Australia and Peru," Yeomans indicated.

The diplomat said Australia aims to deepen ties with Peru by integrating its Mining Equipment, Technology, and Services (METS) companies through closer strategic cooperation, boosting critical minerals exploration and consolidating the presence of more Australian firms operating in Peru's mining sector.

As an example of investment activity, he mentioned three major projects in Peru, noting that Orica is close to investing around US$1 billion in a petrochemical plant in Ilo or Marcona to produce explosives, ammonia, urea, and ammonium nitrate, using natural gas from the Camisea project.

"That project will enable Peru to produce all inputs needed for the mining sector and the agricultural sector," the ambassador underscored.

The envoy indicated that AusQuest — a junior exploration company — has discovered a gold and silver porphyry at its Cangallo project in Arequipa region, southern Peru.

Yeomans added that Bradken is building a state-of-the-art steel foundry in Chilca, with an investment worth over US$100 million, which is expected to be inaugurated this July.

"These are three significant examples and a good illustration of how Australia wants to continue working with you," he stressed.

The diplomat noted that when he recently presented his credentials to the President of the Republic, Jose Jeri, the top official requested greater Australian investment in Peru.

Before the latest meeting concluded, Minister Bravo described Ambassador Yeomans' announcements as "very good news for Peru."

The Cabinet member noted that these investments will not only contribute to Peruvian economy but will also generate more jobs and improve the quality of life for more Peruvians and their families.
