The emblematic "Cristo Cholo," who each year reenacts the Passion of Christ in the capital with great effort and devotion, on Good Friday asked God to bless the Peruvian people, minutes before beginning his ascent to San Cristobal Hill.

"From the bottom of my heart, bless your people, Lord. Calm your anger. Grant us your blessing and fill us with peace," said Julio Mario Valencia Rivadeneyra, who has portrayed Jesus for 49 years.

Before a large crowd gathered at Santa Rosa passage in downtown Lima, the actor—internationally known as the "Peruvian Christ"—delivered a message addressed to Lima Mayor Renzo Reggiardo.

"Sir, govern for those who need it most. They will remember you forever. From the bottom of your heart, be filled with love, goodwill, and faith, and let us move our beloved Lima forward," he stated.

Amid the upcoming 2026 General Elections, scheduled for April 12, he called on the country to "come together as one communion, one force, and push the cart in the same direction. May faith and peace come to our people. From the bottom of my heart. Blessed be."

Finally, the performer thanked God for giving him another opportunity to portray Jesus at his most difficult moment.

"Thank God for allowing me to be with all my people and the entire world, for as long as He permits. Thank you very much. Let us continue the journey. Blessings. May God allow us to reach San Cristobal. So it shall be," he expressed.

About to turn 70, Valencia has never stopped training for this celebration.

After suffering a serious fall in 2019 that left him with multiple injuries, he had to adjust his training routine.

Despite physical limitations, Valencia said he remains firmly committed to this representation and has no plans to stop portraying Christ on the cross.

"There is always a contingency plan, but we trust in God's will. This commitment lasts for as long as He permits," he said in an interview with Andina News Agency.
