2020 elections: EU election observation mission chief meets with RENIEC head in Peru

11:22 | Lima, Dec. 24.

Deputy Chief Observer of the European Union Election Observation Mission (EUEOM) to Peru Manuel Sanchez de Nogues met with the Head of the National Registry of Identification and Civil Status (RENIEC) Bernando Pachas Serrano.

Held on Monday, the meeting saw the presence of EUEOM and RENIEC teams.

The aim was to plan the work of the mission with a view to monitoring Peru's parliamentary elections scheduled for January 26, 2020.

In addition, Sanchez and his team gathered with Director of International Organizations and Multilateral Policy at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Rolando Ruiz Rosas, in order to coordinate preparations for the electoral process.

Some 50 EU observers will arrive in Peru on December 26 as part of the European Union Election Observation Mission (EUEOM).

As stated by EU Ambassador to Peru Diego Mellado a few days ago, this first group is composed of long-term observers, who will monitor meetings, talk to authorities and candidates, among other actions.

The European Union has deployed this mission in response to an invitation by Peruvian authorities.

24,799,384 Peruvian citizens are eligible to participate in the upcoming elections both in their home country and from abroad.

The new 130 legislators will serve the remaining period of the 2016-2021 legislative tenure, following a constitutional dissolution of Congress in September.
