The population residing in the 43 districts that make up Lima has reached 10,151,000 inhabitants, who account for 30.1% of the total population in Peru, the
National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) reported on Wednesday on the occasion of the 488th founding anniversary of the "City of Kings."
According to INEI projections on Lima's population through June 30, 2022, 52.2% of inhabitants (5,301,000) are women and 47.8% (4,850,000) are men.
Data broken down by age and sex show a higher proportion of women aged 15 to 39 over men, with the female population reaching 38.1%, as compared to 36.9% for males.
Likewise, the proportion of women in the elderly population (60 years old and older) is above that of men, making up 17.2% of said age group, compared to 16.6% of men.
Meanwhile, in the age group of 0-14 years, the proportion of men (19.5%) exceeds that of women (17.7%); while, in the 40- to 59-year age group, the percentage of women and men is the same (27.0%).
San Juan de Lurigancho, home to 12.3% of Lima's population
Out of the 43 districts that make up the City of Lima, San Juan de Lurigancho is home to 1,245,000 inhabitants.
Similarly, it should be pointed out that 58.4% of Lima's inhabitants are concentrated in 10 districts, led by San Juan de Lurigancho (12.3%), followed by San Martin de Porres (7.7%), Ate (7.1%), Comas (5.8%), Villa Maria del Triunfo (4.5%), Villa El Salvador and Carabayllo (4.3% each), San Juan de Miraflores and Santiago de Surco (4.2% each), and Puente Piedra (4.1%).
Meanwhile, the 10 districts with the smallest populations in Metropolitan Lima are Santa Maria del Mar, Punta Negra, San Bartolo, Pucusana, Punta Hermosa, Barranco, Cieneguilla, Santa Rosa, Chaclacayo and San Luis, which together account for 2.8% of the capital city's population.
Immigrant population
The capital city is home to thousands of immigrants from all over the country, with 11.2% of them coming from the region of Junin, followed by Ancash (8.6%), Cajamarca (7.3%), Lima Region (6.8%), Ayacucho (6.2%), Piura (6.0%), and Huanuco (5.7%).
Similarly, in Metropolitan Lima, 67.6% of people aged 12 and over identify themselves as mestizo, 17.1% as indigenous, 7.2% as white, 2.8% as Afro-Peruvian, among others.
Furthermore, data disaggregated by districts reveal that 16.0% of the indigenous population is concentrated in San Juan de Lurigancho and 10.9% in Ate, while 11.9% of the Afro-Peruvian population resides in San Juan de Lurigancho and 9.4% in San Martin de Porres.
