18:20 | Lima, Dec. 08 (ANDINA).
Universitario de Deportes took a huge step towards the Peruvian Championship title with a workmanlike win over arch-rivals Alianza Lima at a packed Alejandro Villanueva stadium in Lima’s La Victoria district.
Universitario striker Piero Alva scored the only goal of the match in the 29th minute after smashing an unstoppable volley kick into the back of the net to put “La U” 1-0 up.
In the second half, the home side tried their best to score the equalizer but the strong Universitario defense and a brilliant Raul Fernandez stopped every attempt to goal from Alianza’s Colombian star Jhonnier Montano and striker Juan Diego Gonzales.
For the second-leg final on Sunday, Dec. 13, Universitario, coached by former Peru captain Juan Reynoso, will only need a draw to lift the league title for the 25th time in Peru's football history.
