Peruvian surfer Sofia Mulanovich had a successful beginning at the Movistar Peru Classic presented by Rip Curl, Event No. 5 of 7 on the 2009 ASP Women’s World Championship Tour, where she qualified for the third round.
She outclassed her rivals with a score of 13.06 in the heat No. 5 of the initial stage. Brazil’s Jacqueline Silva claimed second place with 10.07 and pumped to the third stage, while the Hawaiian Megan Abubo with 8.97 was relegated to the repechage round scheduled for tomorrow.
Delivering a performance that fulfilled expectations of visitors and surf fans at Zorritos Beach, an hour from Mancora, Sofia was able to ride four waves in thirty minutes, achieving the highest scores in the third and fourth ones with 7.33 and 5.73.
Mulanovich's score of 7.33 points was the second highest heat total of the day after the 7.67 scored by Stephanie Gilmore.
The championship leader was first in the third group with 14.44 points and moved to the next round accompanied by Rosanne Hodge with 11.20.
Sofia Mulanovich, 26, former ASP Women's World Champion (2004) and current ASP Women's World No. 4, utilized her years of experience at the break to advance directly through to Round 3.
"It is great to be competing at home," Mulanovich said. "Hopefully the waves get more consistent but I think it is going to be a good show for everyone. It is great to have the whole family here and the fans, they are fun."
The Movistar Peru Classic presented by Rip Curl will host the ASP Top 17 from November 3 - 8, 2009.
