Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) of the United States of America, Todd D. Robinson, visited Lima, Peru, this week to discuss opportunities for collaboration to combat transnational organized crime.

On February 6, the U.S. government official held a meeting with Peru's Interior Minister Victor Torres to underscore the U.S. commitment to the fight against transnational organized crime and illicit drugs.

During this gathering, the officials discussed the new US$3.3 million project by the INL to train Peruvian National Police (PNP) agents from the cities of Iquitos, Ayacucho, Puerto Maldonado, and Cusco.

It is focused on the latest police techniques to ensure safer streets and stronger communities in Peru.

Within this framework, the guest highlighted the importance of Peru's upcoming Model Police Precinct project, slated to launch in the aforementioned key cities.

Focused on modernizing policing strategies and strengthening the Peruvian National Police, the initiative aims to prevent crime, reduce violence, and bolster citizen security through collaborative efforts with the INL, the PNP, and the Interior Ministry.

"Integrating community-based policing and specialized training, the project will also address gender-based violence and promote diversity within law enforcement," the U.S. Embassy in Lima stated.

"As the project progresses, its impact is expected to extend nationwide, contributing to broader security objectives and fostering stronger police-community relations across Peru," it added.

Furthermore, Assistant Secretary Robinson visited the Port of Callao to emphasize the joint coordination between both countries against organized crime.

U.S. Embassy officials, along with Assistant Secretary Robinson, also visited the therapeutic justice program supported by the INL for youth facing substance abuse challenges at the Ventanilla Superior Court of Justice in Callao region.

"The United States supports Peru's initiatives that ensure the education and health of youth," its diplomatic mission in Lima expressed via social media.

From February 7-9 in Guayaquil and Quito, Assistant Secretary Robinson will work with Ecuadorian counterparts on furthering U.S. support to Ecuador's stand against recent appalling levels of violence at the hands of narco-criminal elements, reads a media note issued by the U.S. State Department.
