Peruvian Prime Minister Alberto Otarola on Wednesday affirmed that the Government's core mission is to protect the population in the face of the imminent danger that the eruptive process at Ubinas Volcano —in Peru's southern Moquegua region— represents.
At a press conference, the Cabinet chief announced that the Government has approved —at the session of the Council of Ministers— a supreme decree declaring a state of emergency in various districts of General Sanchez Cerro province in said region.
According to Otarola, this document authorizes immediate intervention, in matters within their competence, of Moquegua Region's Governor, regional and district authorities, the
National Civil Defense Institute (Indeci), and various ministries, both in damage control and actions to immediately assist the population.
"The core mission at this moment is to protect the population in the face of a possible imminent danger (due to Ubinas Volcano)," the senior official remarked.
Other measures announced
The head of the Ministerial Cabinet also announced that an urgency decree to ensure continuity of educational services in the regions of Lambayeque, Piura, and Tumbes was approved at Wednesday's Council of Ministers session.
"This will mean an investment of more than S/67 million (about US$18.4 million), which will benefit more than 5,000 schools in these areas," he stated.
Similarly, Otarola underscored that reports on the measures being implemented in response to the Global El Niño phenomenon have been received from various sectors.
In this regard, the Prime Minister emphasized that
President Dina Boluarte herself last week announced that the Government is planning to invest more than S/1.400 billion (about US$386.3 million) to carry out cleaning and clearing works, as well as to purchase machinery in direct cooperation with regional and local authorities.
