The
Congress of the Republic, via legislative resolution, has authorized the entry of a foreign naval vessel and military personnel carrying weapons of war into Peruvian waters.
In this regard, its resolution authorizes the entry into Peruvian waters of the Spanish Navy training ship 'Juan Sebastian Elcano' and military personnel from Spain with the aim of making a stopover at the Port of Callao from April 15 to 20 this year, as part of the XCV Training Cruise.
Additionally, it provides for an anchoring prior to the entry into port on April 14. To that end, the vessel is set to enter the maritime domain starting April 9 and leave Peruvian waters on April 25, 2023.
Moreover, the Executive Branch is authorized, by means of the Supreme Resolution adopted by the
Ministry of Defense (Mindef), to change —in cases of unforeseen reasons— the starting date of the implementation of operational activities considered in the aforementioned legislative resolution.
"(…) as long as such change does not exceed the time the ship can stay in Peru and is made before entering national waters," the resolution reads.
Likewise,
Defense Minister Jorge Chavez will proceed to report it to the Congress' Commission for National Defense, Internal Order, Alternative Development and Fight against Drugs, within 48 hours after the aforementioned supreme resolution is issued.
