Relations between Peru and South Korea are undergoing a phase of consolidation and expansion, driven by trade agreements, strategic cooperation, and participation in development projects, Ambassador Jong-uk Choi stated.

In an interview with the Official Gazette El Peruano, the diplomat underscored that both countries have built a solid relationship following the establishment of bilateral relations in 1963.

He added that the relationship was strengthened with the signing of the Free Trade Agreement in 2011 and the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2012.

"Thanks to the Free Trade Agreement, bilateral trade volume has doubled for more than 10 years, reaching over US$3 billion annually," the ambassador pointed out.

In the trade sector, South Korea maintains strong demand for Peruvian products, especially agricultural and fishery goods such as grapes, mangoes, avocados, coffee, squid, and shrimp, as well as strategic minerals such as copper and zinc, which are essential to the Korean economy.

"Currently, Koreans purchase many Peruvian agricultural and fishery products (…) Mineral resources such as copper, zinc, and other key Peruvian minerals also play a crucial role in South Korea’s economic security," he indicated.

Defense and security cooperation

Regarding bilateral cooperation, Choi highlighted the level achieved as strategic partners, which has enabled progress in sectors such as defense and security, contributing to the strengthening of military capabilities and Peru's industrial development through technology transfer and training.

"This collaboration contributes to strengthening Peru's military capability and the country’s industrial development through technology transfer," he stated.

Regarding infrastructure, the ambassador highlighted the participation of Korean companies in projects such as the Chinchero Airport, Lima Metro Line 2, and intelligent transport systems.

Likewise, the diplomat expressed South Korea's interest in becoming involved in future railway projects.

"Korean construction companies seek to participate in the major railway projects being promoted by the Peruvian government, such as Lima Metro Lines 3 and 4 and the Lima–Ica railway," he indicated.

Moreover, Choi underscored the importance of continuing to strengthen ties between both countries within the framework of a shared development vision in the Asia-Pacific region.

"I am confident that the relationship between Korea and Peru will continue to strengthen under a shared vision of prosperity as strategic partners," he concluded.

The ambassador also announced that activities will take place at the Ministry of Culture from March 27 to April 1 to commemorate, for the first time, Peru–Korea Brotherhood Day.
