As part of the government's efforts to expand air connectivity,
recently highlighted the importance of the new direct Salt Lake City (Utah)–Lima route.
The Cabinet member emphasized that this unprecedented connection marks a milestone, becoming the only non-stop link between the two destinations, which will help boost inbound tourism and attract more international visitors to Peru.
"Salt Lake City is the most populated city in the state of Utah, United States. This new route will open the door for more visitors to arrive in Peru and, from Lima, easily access our main cultural and natural destinations such as Cusco, Machu Picchu, and Arequipa," Minister Leon stated.
"This will generate higher tourism revenue, employment, and economic activity in various regions of the country," she noted.
Reinforcing what she stated before Congress' Foreign Trade and Tourism Commission on September 5, Minister Leon highlighted that this new route will expand connections to other South American destinations such as São Paulo, Buenos Aires, and Santiago de Chile, promoting stopovers in Lima.
"U.S. travelers have a higher-than-average spending and a high return rate. We want this new connection not only to increase international arrivals but also to encourage longer stays in Peru through the stopover strategy, which we are implementing together with international airlines," she added.
The government official also emphasized that tourism and air connectivity are part of the same national effort.
"The opening of new routes, such as Salt Lake City–Lima, is key to consolidating Jorge Chavez Airport as a regional hub for tourism and connectivity, and to projecting Peru as a competitive destination in Latin America," Leon expressed.
She noted that the new Delta Air Lines operation will offer up to seven weekly frequencies on Boeing 767-300ER aircraft with four cabin types, allowing the airline to serve both leisure tourism as well as corporate and MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) travel.
New international routes
In the same vein, it noted that the opening of new international routes, including Lima–Orlando, Lima–Curaçao, Lima–Florianopolis, Lima–Tucuman, Lima–Montreal, Lima–Toronto, and Lima–Iguazu, is scheduled for the last quarter of 2025 and the first quarter of 2026.
