National Elections Board (JNE) Chairman Roberto Burneo on Monday called on the candidates for the Presidency of the Republic to take part in the presidential debates starting today and present their proposals to citizens during the 2026 General Election process.

During an interview with Andina News Agency, the head of the country's top electoral body highlighted the importance of these forums as an opportunity for those seeking the Presidency to connect with the population.

"I call on the candidates, first, to take part, to share their ideas, their points of view, their comments in a very broad manner. This is a major platform, a great opportunity they offer the public not only to get to know them (...), but to reach every corner of the country with their messages," Burneo underscored.

Likewise, he stressed that these meetings will allow citizens to assess not only the proposals, but the demeanor of those seeking to govern the country.

The JNE chairman said he is confident that participants will demonstrate maturity and good conduct, which will help strengthen confidence in the electoral process.

The presidential debates will take place on six dates: March 23, 24 and 25, as well as March 30 and 31, and April 1.

Call for civic responsibility

Regarding the participation of supporters, the JNE chairman acknowledged the enthusiasm typical of elections, but emphasized the need to maintain order.

In that regard, Burneo said the elections should be experienced as an "electoral celebration," carried out in a civilized manner and in which "good practices and people are respected."

In that respect, he reiterated his confidence in the population's maturity.

Equal conditions

Regarding the organization of debates, the JNE head reported that each candidate will be allowed to attend with two advisers, who will provide support in preparation and during the event.

Burneo specified that one of them will be in the debate area and the other in an adjacent room, with private spaces available for prior preparation.

These conditions—he explained—are intended to ensure that candidates participate on equal footing.

Finally, the JNE chairman invited the public to follow the presidential debates through JNE TV Media, as well as on TV Peru and other broadcasters that will air this democratic forum.
