In remarks before the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), the President of the Republic Dina Boluarte on Tuesday proposed a pact to provide care to those who suffer the effects of the weather events affecting the world.

"Let's make this pact, a pact for the world, a pact for life," the Peruvian President said in her speech at the aforementioned forum.

Mrs. Boluarte pointed out that today it is Peru that requires actions to face the imminent Global El Niño phenomenon, but later it will be another country that needs support in similar situations.

"I propose a pact: a commitment to action and international cooperation for immediate response to weather events. A pact based on solidarity, resilience, and interdependence," she stressed.

Moreover, the dignitary stated that, for the first time in Peru, "a government has undertaken a campaign against global El Niño, with S/4 billion (around US$1.079 billion) of investment."

Call for developed countries

The Head of State also lamented that, despite the fact that developing countries have reduced their carbon emissions, "we continue to be the most affected by climate disasters."

Counteracting this "implies that developed countries not only adopt more ambitious emission reduction goals, but also honor their commitments regarding technology transfer and financing," she remarked.

In that regard, the top official considered it urgent to mobilize US$100 billion per year previously committed to address climate action in developing countries, as well as to establish the Loss and Damage Fund.

Likewise, President Boluarte indicated that Peru has already completed and submitted to the UN the project to protect the marine environment from plastic pollution.
