Pope Leo XIV sends blessings to Peru during audience with Judiciary head

Pope Leo XIV received Peruvian Judiciary Chairwoman Janet Tello Gilardi in a private audience as part of her working agenda in Vatican City, where she participated in an international forum on legislation addressing climate change.

The meeting was held in the Paul VI Hall of the Pontifical House, which lasted nearly 20 minutes.

In this context, the Judiciary head explained to the Supreme Pontiff the work carried out by Peru's judges in support of people in vulnerable situations.

The magistrate told His Holiness about the itinerant justice service carried out by judges when they travel to remote areas across the Peruvian coast, highlands, and jungle regions to deliver justice to vulnerable populations.

Likewise, they discussed efforts aimed at the resocialization of people convicted of minor crimes, who carry out community service to help repair environmental damage caused by global warming.

The Judiciary head also informed Pope Leo XIV about the campaign currently being carried out by the court system in support of the rights of children and adolescents through the delivery of judicial deposits related to child support payments, labor compensation, civil reparations, and other benefits.

During the meeting, Tello highlighted that Peruvian judges, whose work sets them apart from other judicial systems, always defend judicial independence in the South American country.

Moreover, they discussed the possibility that when the Catholic Church's highest authority visits Peru in the coming months, he could deliver a message to the faithful from the Justice Palace's front façade.

Pope Leo XIV's greeting

Meanwhile, the Supreme Pontiff—who holds both U.S. and Peruvian nationality—sent a greeting to all Peruvians through Tello Gilardi as a sign that he always keeps them in his prayers and blessings.

Additionally, with the presidential runoff election approaching, the Pope expressed his best wishes for Peru and hoped that the person elected will govern for everyone, especially the most vulnerable people.

At the end of this audience, the Judiciary head presented the Holy Father with a copy of the book on the Convention on the Rights of the Child, prepared by the Access to Justice Commission, which she also chairs.

It should be noted that Tello Gilardi arrived in Vatican City to participate in the workshop titled "Building Climate Resilience Legislation," organized by the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences (PASS), which was held last Tuesday.

The forum brought together lawmakers, emerging leaders, public policy experts, and judges to share concrete examples of climate resilience legislation and learn from successful cases in order to turn them into effective political and policy actions.

During her speech, the judicial authority presented the policies, actions, and rulings promoted in Peru to protect the environment and combat climate change.

In that regard, she highlighted that judges in the country have issued rulings aimed at repairing environmental damage, protecting human rights, and responding to the impacts of climate change.
