Pope Leo XIV has confirmed that he will carry out his planned trip to Latin America following his recovery from surgery for lung cancer. In a statement, the Vatican clarified that Pope Leo XIV’s Apostolic Journey to Uruguay, Argentina, and Peru—scheduled for November 6–17, 2026—"will proceed according to the previously published schedule."
"May this journey be an opportunity to open our hearts to one another, strengthen our communion as brothers and sisters, and renew our commitment to proclaim the Gospel with joy," wrote Leo XIV on his official social media channels. The message was accompanied by hashtags for the countries included in his tour: #Uruguay #Argentina #Peru.
At the same time, the Holy See Press Office confirmed that, two weeks after his surgery, "the Holy Father’s recovery continues, in line with the positive assessments provided by his medical team."
It noted that post-operative medical examinations "confirmed that the disease was localized and that no further oncological treatment is necessary."
"Dr. Luigi Carbone (the Pope’s physician) confirms that the Holy Father’s post-operative recovery continues to progress, and the latest medical tests attest to his good state of health and favorable clinical condition," the official report stated this Monday.
"Given his current clinical situation, as well as the results of diagnostic tests and laboratory analyses, there are no contraindications that would prevent him from undertaking his upcoming apostolic journey to Latin America as planned," the Vatican stated—to the delight of the faithful awaiting him in Uruguay, Argentina, and Peru.
The Holy See also indicated that the Pope “is following medical recommendations with great care and diligence, and with a firm determination to continue serving the Church.”
