Young Sporting Cristal player Yair Clavijo died on Sunday during a reserve game against Real Garcilaso in Cusco.

Clavijo, who was just 18 years old, collapsed on the field with only five minutes remaining in the match played at the Municipal Stadium in Cusco's Urcos district, located at 3,150 meters above sea level.

The medical staff at the stadium immediately rushed to revive Clavijo and even received support from an ambulance present nearby but the Sporting Cristal defender did not recover.

Initial reports indicated Clavijo died from a massive cardiopulmonary arrest but a coroner's report later listed the cause of death as cerebral edema, caused by an underlying heart condition.

According to Sporting Cristal, the young defender had passed all of his medical tests and was declared fit to play. Clavijo was recently named to the Peruvian Under-18 national team.
